Africa has evolved in music and specifically rap music, the male MCs are getting to the top but the females are not widening the gap, why we decided to make a list of the Top 10 African Female Rappers of 2020.
Fans, music lovers and critics love lists. But in rap, rankings like these take on a special level of import: aside from moving a crowd (shouts to Sarkodie), MC means proving you’re the best. In no other genre do artists so blatantly express their desire to outdo competition.
Note: We’re ranking these rappers as MCs, not artists.
These following Rappers are ranked based on style, originality, lyrics, flows, and recognitions.
These are the Top 10 African Female Rappers for 2020
01. Boity – South Africa
Boitumelo Thulo is a rapper and a successful businesswoman who compares to none other. Her name first gained publicity while she was working with The Media Career Guide Show as a co-host, and her career eventually blossomed in 2011, a period within which she served as a presenter for Crib Notes educational show. 02. Eva Alordiah – Nigeria
Since her breakthrough into the Nigerian music industry, Eva has garnered several awards including one Nigeria Entertainment Award from 4 nominations, one Eloy Award, and one YEM award from 2 nominations. Her debut EP, titled The GIGO E.P, was released for free digital download on 20 November 2011. In November 2014, Eva released her self-titled second EP. Her debut studio album, 1960: The Album, was released in September 2016.
03. Eno Barony – Ghana
Eno came to wider attention when she released her first single, “Tonga”, in 2014, which received commercial airplay. She later recorded more songs including “Megye Wo Boy” in 2015, on which she collaborated with Abrewa Nana. She broke the silence with hip hop song titled “The Best” with multiple award-winning Togolese artiste and Brand Ambassador for Togocel, Mic Flammez. She recorded a single, “Daawa”, with Shatta Wale in 2016.
04. Nadia Nakai – South Africa
Nakai made her first television appearance on the e.tv hip hop show Shiz Niz where she won the Mixtape 101 competition, making her the first female to win the competition. She then rose to prominence in September 2013, when she released her debut single Like Me. The following year, she was featured on the remix of Riky Rick song, Amantombazane amongst various acts. As for June 2015, Nakai released her third single Saka Wena featuring rapper Ice Prince, following her second single, Whatever featuring DotCom and Psyfo.
05. Rosa Ree – Tanzania
Beginning her career as a singer, social media posts eventually drew the attention of the music industry. In 2015, Rosa Ree was signed as an artist by The Industry Studios, a label headed by Tanzanian rapper and producer Nahreel. Three years later she signed to South African record label Dimo Entertainment. In addition to writing her own lyrics and music, she regularly collaborates with other African artists. Since launching her rap career they have included Emtee, Khaligraph Jones, Bill Nass. In early 2019 a collaboration on a song called “Kipopo” with Kenyan rapper Timmy Tdat sparked speculation about a relationship between the two artists, but were denied.
06. Mz Kiss – Nigeria
In 2010, Mz Kiss started her journey into music, she released her debut singles You Go Craze in 2012, Holla at Me in 2013. She released Figure 8 on April 3, 2013, the first single after signing on to Taurus Musik and Bad Dog Entertainment which received massive reception, thereby gaining her new grounds in the industry.
07. Bombshell Grenade – Zambia
In December 2016, she released the single “Shame Ol’ Me” featuring Mumba Yachi. In November 2018, she released the single “Jump Off”. Her 2019 single “Backshot” was described by the Lukasa Star as one of the year’s “hit singles”. She is affiliated with the reusable sanitary pad company Urban Girl, stating in January 2020, “It gives me so much delight knowing that I am helping people out there that are unable to buy the usual sanitary towels.”
08. Muthoni Drummer Queen – Kenya
Muthoni Drummer Queen or Muthoni Ndonga is a Kenyan rapper, percussionist producer and entrepreneur. She produces alternative electro-hip-hop music and founded the festivals Africa Nouveau and Blankets & Wine in East Africa.
09. Rouge – South Africa
In December 2014, Rouge released her second single “Mi Corazon” featuring rapper BigStar Johnson, following her debut single, “Party”. The following year, rapper AKA featured Rouge alongside other female rappers in the remix of his song “Baddest”. As for 2016, Rouge then released the song “Mbongo Zaka” featuring Moozlie. The song gained her prominence as it was her first song to top charts on all major radio stations across South Africa.
10. Naomi Achu – Cameroon
Naomi Achu is a Cameroonian singer, rapper, and songwriter. She is best known for “Alhadji,” which was played in the eighth season of Big Brother Africa. Naomi is credited with being among the forerunners of Cameroonian pop music, particularly in the diaspora. She goes by the moniker “Queen of Bamenda.”
