Is Macky 2 a good Political fit?

Popular musician Mark Mulaza Kaira, fondly known as Macky 2, has declared his intention to run for political office. For me, this move marks a significant shift for the artist; one that could make or break him. Although, I think there is a lot to learn from how he has constantly evolved and redefined himself to stay relevant. Many people fail to do this, especially in the creative space. Jobs like Macky 2’s and mine are really about reinventing yourself because they are seasonal. There’s always a new kid on the block doing better than you.

I’d like to start this article with a disclaimer. I am not a political scientist, but a journalist who has followed global and local politics quite keenly. It is important to add too that this is just my opinion and can be wrong. Interestingly, sometime last year, I had asked producers for my show β€œThis Day”, to reach out to Macky 2 for an interview on politics. My objective was to gain an alternative perspective on socioeconomic inequality; an issue often discussed through a narrow, stereotypical lens. Unfortunately, we never heard back from him, which was understandable. Many public figures prefer to steer clear of active political engagement.

Now, however, Macky 2 has formally entered the political arena. Given his influence, particularly on the Copperbelt, his candidacy is likely to be formidable. At this stage, it is difficult to envision anyone successfully challenging him for a parliamentary seat in that region, in my humble opinion.

Now, as a keen observer of leadership and governance and as a patriot too; I firmly believe that leadership must be held sacred. It is not a popularity contest, nor should it be reduced to a platform for personal gain. Leadership is about responsibility. It is about the lives of the people. Those who seek public office must be prepared to meet a higher standard – one that goes beyond fame, influence, or the ability to command a crowd.

That being said, I also believe in objective analysis. I do not want it to ever appear that leadership is for the elite and white collared. I had no issue, for example, with a comedian like Volodymyr Zelenskyy becoming President of Ukraine, nor with George Weah, a former football star, leading Liberia. Similarly, I respect the political passion of Ugandan musician-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine. What matters is not where a leader comes from but whether they have a vision, a plan, and the ability to effect meaningful change.

If I’m allowed to be a bit biased, I actually think I can see him fitting in just fine in parliament.
I think Macky 2’s track record suggests that he understands the struggles of ordinary people. Throughout his career, he has positioned himself as a humanitarian, speaking for and uplifting the underprivileged even through his music. His philanthropy has not been limited to donations but has extended to empowering communities through initiatives that promote self belief.

It is also important to always talk about character when it comes to leadership. We can’t ignore his 2011 arrest, but constitutionally, nothing stops him from standing.

In recent years, Macky 2 has led a relatively quiet life, avoiding unnecessary controversy. Even when he faced accusations, however unfounded, he handled them with composure and addressed them appropriately. He has not been one to engage in reckless social media spats or public outbursts. Instead, he has increasingly become a voice of reason. These are commendable qualities in any leader.
His consistent focus on the struggles of the underprivileged, particularly those from the ghetto, if I may, speaks volumes about his priorities. Let’s not forget his efforts to uplift emerging artists. That, you can say, further demonstrates his commitment to empowering others. Hard work, determination, and a sense of responsibility are qualities that can serve him well in political office. However, as with all leaders, there is only so much the public can know about him beyond what is visible. True leadership is tested in action, not in perception.

Macky 2 has demonstrated leadership qualities, but political leadership demands much more. As a journalist, my responsibility is to hold him, and all leaders, accountable on behalf of the people. Once he enters public office, he will no longer have the luxury of operating on personal terms. The people will have the right to demand answers, and he will owe them transparency and accountability.
The key question I have for him now is: What is his plan? How does he intend to improve the lives of the people he seeks to represent?

Parliament is not just a platform for influence, it is the seat of legislation. What laws does Macky 2 intend to advance for the benefit of young people in his constituency? What policies will he champion to address pressing socioeconomic challenges?

These are the questions he must answer as he transitions from a celebrated musician to a public servant. In the coming months, the public will expect him to articulate his vision and provide concrete solutions. He probably doesn’t need it to win, but he needs it if he really means well.

For now, we wish him well. Ultimately, leadership should always serve the greater good, and the hope is that his entry into politics will contribute positively to the nation. Also, always remember that an election is won at the ballot; so we can only know when the people decide!
I like to say, leadership means life.

Let it be sacrosanct. Let leaders and whoever aspires to lead know that it is not a circus. Let them be held by a standard above us, otherwise we can all lead ourselves. Let them learn responsibility. It is not a joke. It is not about being the loudest. It is not about being the most likeable. It is not about the most known. It is people’s lives.
